Testing Categories

Historical testing covered key performance areas relevant to architects, engineers, contractors and asset owners.

Chemical Resistance

Testing included exposure to nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, acetone and other aggressive environments.

Corrosion & Weathering

SABS testing included salt fog resistance, artificial weathering, impact resistance, flexibility and coating thickness evaluation.

Abrasion & Adhesion

Testing included ASTM D4060 Taber abrasion and SABS / ISO adhesion evaluations on coated panels.

Water Contact Suitability

SABS tainting and toxicity testing was performed in accordance with SABS 1217 requirements.

Technical Testing Timeline

A simplified timeline of documented historical tests and field performance references.

1982

Brake Fluid Immersion Testing

Alfred Teves tested coating performance in brake fluid immersion at 90°C for 207 hours. Result: adhering well with no signs of disintegration.

1987

Eskom Chemical Resistance Testing

Testing included nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, aqua regia, sulphuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, perchloric acid, sodium hydroxide and acetone. Results recorded no physical damage or no discolouration/no physical damage depending on the chemical exposure.

1987

Food Pickling Environment

Irvin & Johnson reported no deterioration after 12 months in a food pickling environment.

1988

Zinchem Storage Tank Application

Zinchem assessed the coating for salts plant storage tanks and found it suitable for application.

1989

SABS Corrosion, Weathering & Mechanical Testing

SABS testing included 1000-hour salt fog, 1000-hour artificial weathering, temperature resistance at 150°C for 20 hours, abrasion resistance, falling sand dry abrasion, impact resistance and cross-cut adhesion.

1990

Langeberg Foods Performance Reference

Food pickling environment reference by Langeberg Foods Limited recorded excellent results.

1991

Military Vehicle Evaluation

ERMETEK evaluated the coating in environments involving oils, brake fluid, diesel and grinding exposure. The system was recorded as approved by Armscor and the South African Army.

1991

CSIR Electrostatic Testing

CSIR testing using a Wagner Dual Tester recorded no electrostatic properties.

1992

Firestone High Traffic Floor Reference

Firestone South Africa reported excellent condition after 12 months in high traffic floor service.

1994

CSIR Combustion Testing

CSIR combustion testing under UL214 recorded that SO411 does not support combustion.

1994

SABS Heat Exposure Testing

SABS testing at 300°C for 2 hours recorded carbonising at edges with no loss of adhesion.

1995

Coca-Cola Bottling Plant Reference

Caustic soda exposure in a bottling plant environment recorded very good results over a 3-year period.

1996

Firestone Maintenance Savings

Firestone South Africa reported floor maintenance savings after 4 years, with a recorded saving of R556,683.00.

1997

SABS Abrasion & Adhesion Testing

SABS testing included ASTM D4060 abrasion and SABS ISO 2409 adhesion. Results included 0.045g loss and no loss of adhesion. Additional abrasion readings recorded 0.038g at 1000 cycles and 0.056g at 2000 cycles.

1999

Karino Citrus Long-Term Reference

After 10 years of use in a citrus processing bath, no refurbishment was required.

1999

Department of Water Affairs Reference

Sterkfontein Dam outlet reference recorded no sign of disintegration from 1995, under a 45 cubic metres per second outlet environment.

2000

SABS 1217 Tainting & Toxicity Test

SABS tainting and toxicity testing recorded compliance with the requirements of SABS 1217.

Featured Validation: Tainting & Toxicity

The SABS 1217 tainting and toxicity evaluation is one of the most important historical tests for water-contact applications. It is especially relevant when discussing coating systems used in reservoirs, water-retaining structures, fish ponds and similar environments.
